Below is a table of known WebTV/MSN TV hardware models, specifications for each one, and a link to a sub-page with more technical details and pictures, if applicable. The information on this page is largely taken from a revision of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSN_TV Wikipedia article] for MSN TV before May 2021, and MattMan's [http://turdinc.kicks-ass.net/Msntv/WebTV-MAME/mame.html MAME for WebTV Plus page], with some information corrected or added onto by ourselves. Sub-pages right now, though, are mostly our own original research. 1 To tell if your INT-W200 is a Derby model, the model number on the back should have the text "(CND)" next to "INT-W200". If there's a small sticker next to the "INT-W200" text and peeling it reveals the same "(CND)" text, your model is most likely a Derby as well.

2 MAT965KB is a version of the Philips Magnavox MAT965 unit that ships with a bundled keyboard. The unit itself to our knowledge does not change between the MAT965 and the MAT965KB.

* Unlike the original WebTV units, the TV2 will accept any keyboard and remote, barring any layout incompatibilities. (i.e Favorites is mapped to the Philips SmartConnect button on an EUR646952A remote)
* UltimateTV keyboards (at least, RCA's), uses a different code from every other keyboard, making it incompatible without setting DIP switches in the battery compartment.
* In both modes, the WKB10WB1 keyboard seems to have issues keeping up with even modestly fast typing.

Welcome to the WebTV/MSN TV Wiki! WebTV, later known as MSN TV, is an internet access device consisting of a set top box that utilized dial-up access (and later on, broadband), using a keyboard and remote for user input. It was also a specialized service complementing said devices that they would connect to for access to the general internet and WebTV/MSN TV's own online services. The product and service launched in 1996 as WebTV, and a year later the company behind this technology, WebTV Networks, was acquired by Microsoft. WebTV later became MSN TV circa 2001, and the entire service would eventually be discontinued on September 30, 2013. This wiki is '''NOT''' about the "WebTV for Windows" application bundled with Windows 98, which is essentially a souped up TV tuner, nor is this wiki about any video streaming services with "Web TV" in the name.

What we are accomplishing with this wiki is to seek out, collect, and document as much information as we can gather on the WebTV/MSN TV internet product's hardware, services, protocols, and other subjects concerning it. Much to the surprise of many, WebTV/MSN TV did indeed already have people focused on learning about the product and how it worked, primarily in its hacking scene. Up until 2021, however, only surface level information about the product and service (especially in regards to its many vulnerabilities), or basic writeups about the technical portions of WebTV/MSN TV were available for public consumption, with most information about WebTV/MSN TV either remaining undocumented, poorly preserved, or in regards to some technical information, circulated privately by select people, never to see the light of day. We're here to make up for that and make all information on WebTV/MSN TV centralized, public, and easily accessible, using information that we have been able to obtain from scene sites, from our own research, and in private from those who know a bit about the product/service. This wiki was originally run by an anonymous person, wtv-411, from early 2021 to September 2022. Ownership of the wiki has since been transferred to JarHead, and future updates to the wiki will be published here.

For now, this wiki will mostly focus on the first generation of WebTV/MSN TV (pre-MSN TV 2) technologies and services, and try to make sense of how they worked. We hope to extend on other information we have though, especially with information concerning the MSN TV 2 seeing as information on that variant of the product and corresponding service specifically is extremely endangered, moreso than the first generation of WebTV/MSN TV products to our knowledge.

MSN TV 2 (stylized '''''msntv''' 2'') was the last major upgrade to the WebTV/MSN TV line of products. It was announced to be in the works by Microsoft around mid 2004, when it was codenamed the "Deuce". It was officially released October 2004, with a price tag of $199.95 for the product itself, and $21.95/mo or $199.95/yr for MSN TV access through dial-up ($9.95/mo or $99.95/yr for those wanting to use the broadband plan). Its main selling points were broadband support and media streaming capabilities, the latter being a far cry from the original WebTV product's focus on internet access through the television.

The MSN TV 2 is essentially a budget PC in set-top box form. The unit now runs on x86 as opposed to MIPS like with first-gen WebTV/MSN TV units, utilizing a 733 MHz Intel Celeron processor. Storage resides on a removable 64 MB CompactFlash card in the unit, where it will boot the OS from, and MSN TV 2 units now have 128 MB of RAM, a massive improvement from the previous generation of boxes. Firmware is based off of a custom version of Windows CE with the browser being a custom-built version of IE6 made for TV displays. The unit itself has both a telephone and Ethernet jack for dial-up and broadband capabilities respectively, composite video and S-Video outputs, and two USB ports for compatible USB devices. Among those compatible devices are select wireless Ethernet (Wi-Fi) adapters, memory card readers, and while unknown to most and only offhandedly mentioned on the official MSN TV site, external keyboard and mice, making the MSN TV 2 the first (and only) WebTV/MSN TV device to have support for mice at all. The MSN TV 2's specs is comparable to that of an original Xbox, but with twice more RAM, no dedicated GPU or audio processing, and way less storage. Coincidentally enough, many of the original WebTV/MSN TV team members later went to work on the Xbox 360 with Microsoft's Xbox division.

== Features ==
MSN TV 2 functionality-wise is similar to the first generation of WebTV/MSN TV units. You use the keyboard and remote/mouse to navigate and supply input to pages. This time around, though, MSN TV 2 now ditches the concept of an on-screen keyboard, essentially requiring the user to use the physical keyboard for text input. The unit still requires you to sign up for the MSN TV service to be able to use it in any capacity. This service on the MSN TV 2 is similar to and loosely connected to the original MSN TV service, but overall is very different in looks and capabilities. The services offered by this service isn't all too different though, offering things such as e-mail, instant messaging, discussion groups, info centers, and more.

Since the MSN TV 2 utilizes more powerful hardware and software compared to its predecessors, it introduced many improvements and new features, which include but aren't limited to:

* A built-in media player that supports audio/video playback and streaming (streaming capabilities were limited to broadband usage)
* Better support for websites
* Improved user interface
* Support for most USB 2.0 devices
* Photo viewing

Photo, video, and music playback can also be used while offline, but those require the box to have already been subscribed and logged in to the MSN TV service.

It's known that the MSN TV 2 ported over some features originally introduced in the first generation WebTV/MSN TV products, including the original MIDI engine and the ability to play background music as you surfed. == Second-Hand Availability of Hardware ==
Starting in the mid 2000s, it appears that at one point in time, almost everyone and their grandma could buy an MSN TV 2 unit second-hand from any auction site, such as eBay, for cheap. The reason for them being sold for cheap at the time isn't exactly easy to guess, but with the discovery of being able to hack the units into cheap Linux boxes, it helped make the cost of performing it quite affordable. Nowadays however, it appears as if MSN TV 2 units are simply more rare to find, with 1 or 2 new listings popping up once in a blue moon on eBay at least. Some can go for ridiculous prices, though, with one listing in particular for a boxed unit being observed at a price of around $50. The cheapest you'll be able to get as of writing are listings for units starting around $20-$25 on eBay, but anyone can potentially find them on other auction sites or in actual shops such as thrift stores.

== Hacking ==
When the MSN TV 2 came out, that seems to have marked the start of the WebTV/MSN TV hacking scene's disbanding. It appears as if most scene hackers simply lost interest and left long before the MSN TV 2's introduction, but some such as MattMan simply did not like the MSN TV 2 and felt that it was the "end of an era". WebTV scene member zefie seems to have been the only person to ever do any sort of hacking with the MSN TV 2 service and hardware. His contributions include extracting the system sounds and some of the HTML and scripts used for system functionality, and exploiting the MSN TV 2 ActiveX controls on remote web pages. What remains of these endeavors has been archived on zefie's archive site, but beware, on the particular site this is currently hosted on, '''without an ad blocker you'll get rammed with ads when browsing the directory and trying to access files: <nowiki>https://archive.midnightchannel.net/zefie/files/msntv2/</nowiki>'''.

Other than that, the most the MSN TV 2 got in terms of hacks was being able to run Linux on it, which is a feat in itself, although methods to do this as of writing involve files you can't easily get anymore, and they may not work with more modern versions of the Linux kernel.

The first partition is used exclusively to store the NK.BIN firmware and files used during the boot process. This renders any factory unit useless unless it is able to download firmware onto itself. Since the official MSN TV service has been discontinued for almost a decade by now and there is no information or data regarding firmware updates on the MSN TV 2, flashing firmware through normal means is almost impossible. For the sake of preservation, we're interested in obtaining backups of the downloadable firmware updates and information on how MSN TV 2 updates were downloaded. MSN TV 2 supports SSL without having to connect to servers to download root certificates like first-gen WebTV/MSN TV is speculated to. So far the certificate stores are assumed to be in the NK.BIN boot image stored on the CompactFlash card as XIP files "msntvcerts.p7b" and "sysroots.p7b", which contain several root certificates from Microsoft and other vendors. Depending on the firmware version your MSN TV 2 box is running, it'll either use SSLv3 or TLSv1 to perform HTTPS requests. Starting in 2023, attempts have been made to document and archive the MSN TV 2 service more extensively outside of this wiki, including how login works. The DishPlayer 7100 manufactured by EchoStar, is the first of the two clients in the DishPlayer series 1st introduced in 1999, It serves two purposes: To connect to WebTV (and later MSNTV branded) services and browse the web, and to use as a DVR to record TV.

It is its own type of set top box, a Dish tuner. Similar to a WebTV Plus box, it contains an IDE hard drive and a TV Tuner. The HDD contains 8.6 GB of storage space, necessary for a DVR.

The 7100 has quite a few differences compared to the contemporary WebTV Plus boxes of the time, it is the only plus box with a hard drive to contain 16mb of ram as all old plus boxes with hdd’s have 8mb (Sony W200, Phillips MAT972, Etc.) and 16mb was only standard in later new plus boxes without hdd’s (Sony W250, Etc.)

It had a bigger stock hdd to make room for DVR recordings via the Dish Features (with later functionality added via Dish’s Personal TV service)

it notably also has two AV outputs with the intention of one going to your TV and one going to a VCR at least from what we could find from info pages about it back in the day, it also has an AV in and mic port on the front, tho it seems with the WebTV builds for the DishPlayer (internally named “WebStar”) any of the VCR pass-through and control functions previously included with plus boxes was removed (most likely swapped out for the DVR functions) and any attempt to try to load the AV input except for taking a picture for email or the website builder just either brakes the page and/or shows a “instant news is unavailable” screen (including in the av factory test)

It also has two smart card slots one for WebTV related stuff on the front and one for Dish service stuff on the back, notably, these boxes will not have much functionality and will refuse to load the TV home without a dish smart card inserted

The DishPlayer Model also notably had a bit of different variation in games and while it included Doom that is pretty much untouched at least look and gameplay wise from the regular plus version, the two big differences is that You Don’t Know Jack notably had downloadable packs of YDJK: The Netshow which is not included on any other plus models and also it includes solitaire which is also not included on any other plus model (also it runs off the doom approm for some reason)

Replacing WebTV (MSN TV) Hard Drives

If the hard drive in your WebTV/MSN TV box has failed for any reason (which is a concern 20+ years after manufacture), or you're replacing the hard drive as a form of preventative maintenance, this article goes in depth on helping you choose the correct hardware. Lists of known compatible hardware is given.

== Before You Proceed ==
Before you tear apart your unit, it would be wise to verify that the hard drive has failed. If your unit displays a message saying "Your Internet terminal is connecting to WebTV to check for the latest update.", it most likely means the internal hard drive has failed. As mentioned on [[Backing Up WebTV (MSN TV) Hard Drives]], you should always unplug the WebTV/MSN TV unit when unplugging the hard drive, as otherwise you risk blowing some fuses that are difficult to replace.

== Choosing a Replacement Storage Medium ==
WebTV/MSN TV hard drives use an IDE connector to deliver data and a Molex cable for power. This gives you a few choices for your replacement, ranging from least to most costly.

* SD to IDE converter
* CompactFlash to IDE converter

If you have any of the devices listed above, you can install it into your unit in place of the original hard drive. If the service you connect to offers flashrom downloads, your unit will download the upgrade and appropriately partition the installed storage medium, if supported. If you are able to back up your original hard drive, you can also write that image to the new drive. Hard drive support tends to be hit or miss, so it is recommended that you check the "Tested Devices" list below.

== Final Notes ==
Before installing any devices, check that the device's "master" jumper position is set, otherwise your unit will not boot off your storage medium. Make sure to take care when mounting a new storage device inside of the box, as it could come in contact with the case or motherboard of your unit and cause permanent damage. You can avoid damage by attaching a non-conductive flat item to the bottom, such as a thin sheet of bubble wrap, cardboard, or anti-static material. No appropriate mounting devices exist for most solutions, but regular IDE hard drives can reuse the original unit's hard drive bracket.

This page's purpose is to catalogue all known power off codes used with each revision of the WebTV/MSN TV product, their purposes, and how they can be triggered. This list is by no means complete or accurate. 

Almost all information so far has been sourced from [http://turdinc.kicks-ass.net/Msntv/powerOff.htm MattMan's page on known power off codes] from his hacking site, with us at the moment merely adding in our own notes and information on previously-unknown power off codes for the MSNTV 2 (codes 8086 and 357).

To trigger power-off code, turn off unit and either press OPTIONS 3 times and then type out numeric code, or use the remote combo if applicable. The box lights should flash for a bit after successfully detecting the code.

To activate, press the S3 key on the Dreamcast keyboard 3 times right as the splash screen appears and type in numeric code. Only some codes have been confirmed to work on WebTV for Dreamcast, others might not work on this release. The time window for entering in the code is also extremely small and not easy to predict, making testing the codes extremely difficult.
